Mission 2009-002 (2/5/2009): Search For Fallen Hiker

RMRU is searching tonight for a fallen hiker below the Palm Springs Tram. See the web site for more details.

Update at 0630 Friday: The hiker was found late last night by RMRU search crews. He had attempted to climb the Skyline Trail yesterday in shorts and a t-shirt, but had become exhausted at the 7,500 foot level and fell several hundred feet. He was hypothermic when found, though apparently uninjured. The rescue team placed him in a sleeping bag and tent and gave him warm liquids to warm him in the sub-zero wind chill (30-40 MPH winds).

Due to the winds a helicopter rescue is not possible and the man is incapable of continuing up the trail, so the team will be hiking him down and should come out at the lower trailhead near the museum sometime this morning unless the winds die down enough for a helicopter rescue at a lower elevation.

Mission 2009-001 (2/3/2009): Missing Hiker Near Idyllwild

After being missing for more than 24-hours, a 35-year-old man was rescued today in Tahquitz drainage, 9 miles from Palm Springs. Working with sheriff's deputies and their aviation unit, RMRU was able to use cell tower information to plot the man's likely location and the helicopter was able to pick him up and fly him to safety. He suffered only minor injuries.

A ore thorough mission review should be available on our web site shortly.

RMRU Press Release (6/3/2008): Team Recognized by County Board of Supervisors

Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit (RMRU) was one of six volunteer search and rescue (SAR) teams honored today by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors with a Proclamation of Recognition for its work in search and rescue missions this year.

Also recognized were Desert Sheriff's Search and Rescue, Riverside County Search Dogs, San Diego Mountain Rescue, San Dimas Mountain Rescue, and Sierra Madre Search and Rescue.

Specifically mentioned in the Proclamation was a search conducted for four days over the Mother's Day weekend, and for several days thereafter, on which these teams worked with RMRU searching for Debbie Huglin who got lost while hiking in Apple Canyon in the San Jacinto Mountains. On Day Three of the search, a skilled SAR mountaineer fell, injuring his leg, and had to be evacuated by helicopter. For more information on this search, see the write up on the RMRU website.
