We received a call just before midnight from the Indio station of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department that a group of Boy Scouts were stranded on a steep hillside in the Mecca Mud Hills. The California Department of Forestry had been called some hours earlier and had attempted to rescue the scouts, but had been unsuccessful.

Members were contacted and then made the long trek down and through Indio and on to Mecca. Just as we left the pavement and started towards the operations base, we were notified by the sheriff that the scouts had been rescued. With that the team members turned around and made the long drive home from the desert.
